Effective January 1, 2025, Maiwald, one of Germany’s leading intellectual property law firms, appointed two new Counsel, Dr. Lukas Delvos and Dr. Jian Sun. Lukas Delvos until recently held the position of a senior associate at Maiwald, and Jian Sun the position of associate.
Dr. Lukas Delvos has been a patent attorney at Maiwald since 2019. His main areas of work include drafting patent applications and handling patent grant proceedings as well as opposition and nullity proceedings. In addition to preparing freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, other essential aspects of his work include advising on portfolio management and patent application strategies. He has extensive knowledge in the field of inorganic and organic chemistry and advises companies and research institutes in the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors.
After completing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry and biochemistry at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, the Université de Montréal and the École Polytechnique, Lukas obtained his doctorate in organic chemistry from the Technical University of Berlin. His research work has been published in numerous specialist journals. He successfully completed his studies in “Law for Patent Attorneys” at the FernUniversität Hagen. In 2019, Lukas was admitted as a German Patent Attorney and in 2021 as a European Patent Attorney. Admission to the Unified Patent Court (UPC) followed in 2023.

Jian Sun has been practicing as a European Patent Attorney at Maiwald since 2018, where his work principally concerns prosecution, defense, enforcement and litigation of intellectual property rights, mainly in the fields of medical technology, communications technology, physics and electrical engineering. Jian has extensive knowledge in the fields of artificial intelligence and digitalization, measurement and process engineering, as well as mobility and energy. Key aspects of his work are patent prosecution and portfolio management, the planning of filing strategies and drafting patent applications, preparing freedom-to-operate and validity opinions, and conducting opposition proceedings.
Jian studied electronics and computer science at the Chinese University of Science and Technology, subsequently earning his doctorate in the field of medical technology at the Technical University of Nanyang in Singapore. After completing a postdoc at XLIM/CNRS in Limoges, France, he went on to successfully complete the “Law for Patent Attorneys” course at the FernUniversität Hagen. Jian was admitted to the European Patent Bar in 2018, and in 2023 to the Unified Patent Court (UPC).
